Insightful Visit to the Faroe Islands
Partners in the Terraforming LIFE project visited the Förka biogas plant to learn how organic waste streams are transformed into valuable resources through circular economy solutions.
Partners in the Terraforming LIFE project visited the Förka biogas plant to explore how organic by-products are transformed into valuable products through circular economy solutions. The visit formed part of the project’s ongoing knowledge-gathering efforts and provided valuable insights into how by-products from agriculture and aquaculture can be converted into useful resources.
Turning Organic Waste into Valuable Resources
Förka utilizes organic by-products from agriculture and aquaculture to produce biogas and organic fertilizer. In doing so, valuable resources are created from materials that might otherwise go to waste, while supporting a more circular use of resources.
During the visit, participants had the opportunity to tour the facility and meet with experts to discuss its development, operation, and ongoing growth. The group also explored the key challenges and opportunities associated with biogas projects and how the experience gained in the Faroe Islands could help inform the development of similar solutions elsewhere.
A Key Part of Terraforming LIFE
Terraforming LIFE is an international collaborative project focused on developing sustainable solutions for the treatment and utilization of organic by-products from aquaculture and agriculture. The project aims to transform these materials into valuable products such as biogas and organic fertilizer, thereby supporting a circular economy and more sustainable resource use.
The project brings together partners from Iceland and the Faroe Islands, including the engineering firm SMJ, which played a key role in the design and development of the Förka biogas plant. The knowledge and experience gained in the Faroe Islands are therefore highly valuable for the continued development of the project and highlight the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing in advancing new circular economy solutions.
The Circular Economy in Practice
The visit to Förka provided participants with valuable insights into how organic by-products from aquaculture and agriculture can be transformed into valuable resources. The facility demonstrates in practice how renewable energy and organic fertilizer can be produced from materials that might otherwise go to waste.
The experience gained in the Faroe Islands highlights the opportunities created by greater resource circularity and collaboration across industries. Solutions like these can contribute to more sustainable resource use, reduce environmental impacts, and create new value within the economy.
