Major development ahead in Þorláksskógar in 2025

The Þorláksskógar project steering committee met on 12 March 2025 to review the status of ongoing projects, the results of the previous year, and planned actions for 2025. In 2024, systematic land restoration work was carried out in and around Þorlákshöfn, including the application of fertilizer to approximately 140 hectares across three key areas to reduce sand drift and strengthen vegetation.

At the same time, a total of around 96,000 tree seedlings of various species were planted, including lodgepole pine, Sitka spruce, poplar, and birch. Meat meal was also applied to a designated area to improve soil conditions and support land restoration.

For 2025, continued work on access track construction is planned, including the development of new tracks to improve access to planting areas. Further fertilizer application and tree planting are also planned, including in lupine-covered areas along the road across Selvogsheiði.

The meeting also addressed cooperation with HYDROS regarding monitoring wells in the area and opportunities for shared use of access tracks. In addition, a letter of intent between the Municipality of Ölfus and Carbfix ehf. was discussed, focusing on assessing the feasibility of carbon storage near Þorlákshöfn, with an emphasis on high-quality implementation and alignment with the development of outdoor recreation areas.

Finally, potential research and development projects were discussed in collaboration with salmon farming companies, Carbfix, and other partners. These include projects related to the use of organic fertilizers and the application of drones for fertilizer distribution in hard-to-access areas. The aim is to further strengthen Þorláksskógar as a model for targeted land restoration, carbon sequestration, and sustainable land use.
