Matvælasjóður (The Icelandic Food Fund) Opens for Applications

Opportunities for Innovation in the Food Sector

The Matvælasjóður (The Icelandic Food Fund) is now open for applications, with the application period running from 2 February to 27 February 2026. The fund offers valuable opportunities for entrepreneurs, companies, and research organisations aiming to develop innovative solutions and strengthen the competitiveness of Icelandic food production.

The purpose of Matvælasjóður is to support innovation, sustainability, value creation, and competitiveness in the production and processing of food and by-products from agriculture and fisheries. The fund supports projects at various stages of development, from early ideas to applied research, product development, and market introduction.

Applications are accepted in four funding categories:

  • Bára – early-stage ideas, supporting projects in moving from concept toward implementation.
  • Kelda – research projects focused on generating new knowledge.
  • Afurð – projects beyond the idea stage that are not yet ready for market launch.
  • Fjársjóður – funding to support market infrastructure and market expansion for products based on Icelandic raw materials.

Applications are submitted through the digital application system Afurð at afurd.is. Applicants are encouraged to review the fund’s guidelines and handbook carefully before submitting their proposals.

Ölfus Cluster is always available to support applicants, offering guidance, feedback on project ideas, and assistance throughout the application process. The cluster’s role is to support ambitious initiatives within food production, innovation, and sustainable value creation.

Matvælasjóður (The Icelandic Food Fund) is a key instrument in strengthening Iceland’s food sector, and Ölfus Cluster strongly encourages interested parties to take advantage of this opportunity.
