Extensive land restoration and a new focus on organic fertilizers in Þorláksskógar

The Þorláksskógar project steering committee met in Selfoss on 18 November 2025 to review the year’s activities and set priorities for the next steps of the project. In 2025, processed fertilizer was applied to approximately 300 hectares of land— a significant increase from the previous year— and a total of around 65,000 tree seedlings were planted across two main areas.

The German organization Woodsup participated in the planting of approximately 50,000 seedlings on restored sands south of the water treatment plant. In addition, tourists took part in planting activities coordinated by Grétar Ingi Erlendsson. The contribution of Land and Forests to projects in the area amounted to just over ISK 17 million during the year.

The meeting also addressed the use of organic fertilizers, including fish waste, meat meal, and other by-products. The aim is to increase the use of organic solutions instead of imported synthetic fertilizers, although challenges remain regarding permitting. It was decided to strengthen outreach and education for local residents and the municipal council on the benefits of organic fertilizers, and to write an article on the development and progress of Þorláksskógar since its inception.

The need for road improvements and the construction of access tracks in the northern part of Hafnarsandur was also discussed, with the aim of improving access to restoration and planting areas. It is planned to request funding in the municipality’s 2026 budget to open tracks that will serve both project activities and future outdoor recreation.

The next meeting of the project steering committee is scheduled for mid-January 2026.
