Two Strong Academic Pathways in Aquaculture at Hólar University

At a time when aquaculture is one of Iceland’s fastest-growing industries, the demand for specialized education and professional expertise continues to increase. Hólar University offers two strong academic pathways designed to meet this need: a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Aquaculture and a research-based Master’s programme in Sustainable Production and Aquaculture (SPA).

BSc Programme in Aquaculture with Strong Industry Connections

The BSc programme in Aquaculture provides students with a solid foundation in fish farming and other areas of aquaculture, including land-based aquaculture, sea-cage farming, seaweed and kelp cultivation, and shellfish farming. The programme is a collaborative effort between Hólar University and the University of Akureyri, combining academic knowledge with practical experience through strong links to industry.

Upon graduation, students possess the knowledge and skills required to work in production, research, development, and innovation within a rapidly growing sector that is playing an increasingly important role in Iceland’s economy.

International Master’s Programme in Sustainable Production and Aquaculture

For those seeking further specialization, Hólar University offers the Master’s programme in Sustainable Production and Aquaculture (SPA). This 120 ECTS research-based degree is taught in English and focuses on sustainability, innovation, and interdisciplinary approaches to aquaculture.

The programme is delivered through extensive collaboration with several of Iceland’s leading universities and research institutions. Partners include Hólar University, the Agricultural University of Iceland, the University of Akureyri, the University of Iceland, and the University Centre of the Westfjords. The programme has also been developed in cooperation with Matís, the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute, and the Icelandic Institute of Natural History.

Strong industry engagement is an integral part of the programme. Students have the opportunity to conduct research projects and practical assignments in collaboration with companies and organizations involved in aquaculture, food production, innovation, and research. This creates a unique environment where academic knowledge meets real-world industry challenges and opportunities.

Education Supporting One of Iceland’s Industries of the Future

The development of these academic programmes reflects the significant growth and transformation that Icelandic aquaculture has experienced in recent years. With increasing emphasis on sustainable food production, innovation, and technological solutions, the demand for highly qualified specialists has grown substantially.

Through its BSc and Master’s programmes in Aquaculture, Hólar University offers a continuous educational pathway for individuals who wish to contribute to shaping the future of the industry and supporting the sustainable development of Icelandic aquaculture.
